Just connect it to whichever views you want to see AdWords data and voila - it will all work in one place. You could track both domains with 1 Account and 2 properties. You could even do cross domain tracking if you really wanted to (do not recommend): https://support.google.com/analytics/answer/1034342?hl=en I would just enable AdWords...

Usually I only handle paid search, or SEO, or occasionally both - so I don't have to have personal responsibility over every marketing channel.

Google tells you volume and expected cost if you choose to use one in adsense. https://adwords.google.com/KeywordPlanner Another place to look is alexa.com. It will tell you keyword phrases that got people to that site. The kewl thing about alexa.com, you can look up any site, such as competitors.
