Twitter vs Google as a Traffic Source1270

Forum Owner Belew private msg quote post Address this user
I used to say Twitter was useless. @Steve convinced me otherwise.

Now, I'll say Twitter is my 2nd best source of quality traffic.

Google is a better source. But how much better.

In the past 31 days ....

Google has sent the forum 267 new users who come back more than 4.4 times per user. Also this number is up almost 40% month over month.

Twitter has sent me MORE new users 453. But they come back much less often - 1.7 times per user and the number of new users has leveled off month over month = not growing. @Steve? What do I do?

Twitter users turn forum pages at 2.4 pages per visit.
Google users turn forum pages at 4.2 page per visit.

Finally, and this is the big tell.

Twitter users stay on site 3:50 per visit.
Google users stay on site a whopping 14:56 per visit.

453 Twitter users spent 49 hrs and 38 minutes on site last month.

268 Google users spent 291 hrs and 12 minutes.

When people come looking they are better users than when they are asked to come.

Pull beats push.

Exactly.

Type in words on search.

Oh lookie here a forum.

Rinse and repeat.

Ahhhh! *insert light globe here*

So, the organic search folk are staying around longer and engaging more than the Twitter folk?

Perhaps the Twitter-sphere is full of tyre kickers?

@SusanDay

Organic visitors stay longer because they found what they are looking for.

Twitter not so much because they were asked to take a look.

Makes sense?

I don't see it as "just happen upon the website" --

1) the real power in Google search is that Google evaluates the content it indexes and then serves it up in response to search queries with the intent of matching content to query. In most cases the people that come to the site as a result are finding what they are actually looking for.

2) on the other hand, YOU craft your own twitter post hyping (or not) what you are offering in YOUR way, not necessarily actually matching the content to the interest. As a result, people coming to the site from a Tweet don't always find what they are interested in.

3) Additionally, people searching on Google are involved in research and are prepared to delve into what they find on a site that offers what they are looking for (thus more page views) whereas Twitter respondents are coming on momentary impulse and will likely leave just as quickly.

While Twitter give you great reach, Google provides a more solid resource for legitimate organic traffic.
