Bill Belew often emphasises the importance of generating content that is designed to satisfy a user inquiry, which means that if your user's inquiry may be satisfied within the first 200-300 words of an article, that is just about the length that the article should be. Superfluous content created simply for the purpose of meeting a minimum word requirement is therefore unnecessary.

Ouch! Busted! You caught me writing something longer.
Where can I go hide?

Thanks for pointing out my contradiction ... 8-)
