How Many Times Have You Started Over?1806

Forum Owner Belew private msg quote post Address this user
This is not do-over, this is start over?

I left the ministry and went into the military.

I left the military to settle in Japan.

I left Japan and resettled in the US.

I had to switch jobs once completely in the US.

I am starting a new venture - building a platform for boomers to write about doing good in our boomer years.

How many times have you started over?

How'd that work for you? Wanna share?

I don't start over again.

I re-invent myself. I call it evolution.

@Belew My do-overs are so numerous there may not be enough room to share.

I left an accounting job at Sears and went back to finish my bachelor's degree in Education

I taught and worked on my Masters at the same time then

I left to work for the Ministry of Education in Victoria BC

I left the government and started my own training business and left that to work for BC Tel in their training department

I went back to my own training business again and left that to go to Silicon Valley to work for Quintus in the CRM space

I left that to work for Avaya in elearning development

I left that to run training for Cisco Systems

I left that to start my own business again in the publishing industry

I left that and went back to Cisco for a few years

I left that when my Visa ran out and started my own business again

I left that to be an adjunct professor

I am now is start over mode again with writing and publishing. This time, I want to add products to sell - so am learning at the same time. Maybe even speak on a cruise or two

I believe four times?

I received my bachelors degree in Interior Architecture (because I thought that was my dream job) and worked 10 years as an interior designer.

Economy bottomed out, lost job and opened an online e-commerce store.

Got a divorce, closed up shop, rolled burritos at Chipotle.

Worked as an admin at Honda and discovered I was good at it.

Started my business to earn extra money, learned more, continue to learn more, and now I LOVE what I do!

Restart. Do over. Evolution. Call it what you will, it all adds up to experience. For me it was as often as necessary or as often as desired. Some might see that as a luxury. Some might call it stupidity. My resume's not worth bananas.

Today, the sum total of my experience, and its integral parts, lets me deal efficiently, effectively, and successfully, with solopreneurs and small businesses of all stripes. My experience has been varied, interesting, exciting, eye opening, mind shaping, and I wouldn't trade a bit of it for anything I can imagine today.

In no particular order, here are some of the things I have done. Some were working for myself, some for others. Some businesses I built and sold. Some, not many, were miserable failures. Some I just walked away from in search of something different. I'll let you know when I figure out what I want to be when I grow up.

I've lived in 16 places, moved more than 20 times (back to the same place on several occasions). The longest I've been in any one place is where I am now (16 years) and the longest I've done any one thing is what I'm doing now (8 years) -- generally I've done (still do) more than one thing at a time, such as owning one or more businesses while working a job for someone else. I've lived, loved, and prospered. I love where I am. I love whom I'm with. I love what I'm doing. Life doesn't owe me a dime.

And I'm not done yet!

I've never started over. I have changed paths, changed jobs, changed houses, moved to different states. Been well off, Been very poor, but I've never started over.

I truly feel everything is a continuing adjustment or desire to become what I want to be when I grow up. I still don't know what I want to be when I grow up.

One interesting change, however, was graduating from University of Illinois, taking an electrical engineering job at a large company and quitting the first day. I didn't like my boss. Went to work at 8 AM, left for lunch and never went back.

Took a job driving a truck and never went back to EE/CS. After 26 years, I was burned out. Literally, a lady tried to commit suicide by truck. I chose a concrete wall instead of her and ended up in a fiery crash with 3rd degree burns and no
chance to return to work. I'm still changing, I'm still happy.
I'm still going down the path, but I'm not starting over.

Well, I was a military wife for most of my adult life. I was married and divorced 3 times. All 3 were in the Air Force. I was married to the last one for 28 years. Ive lived all over the world.Ive also been in insurance sales, and real estate sales. After my last divorce I remembered that I loved to write and I was pretty good at it. So I wrote 2 books and got them published. They are both on Amazon. I am also a fine artist and I love that too. I have no idea what I want to be when I grow up. Haha!It doesnt help that I have ADD.I would like to try copywriting.

Just think of all the lessons you have learned along the way.

Now teach others to not make the same mistakes.

I think I'm in the middle of a pivot just now ... moving away from web design and online marketing towards coaching and teaching others how to do the stuff I do and achieve the results I have.

It's certainly an interesting time ... and not the first pivot I've made...
