Who's Up to Do Something Really Hard?1854

Belew private msg quote post Address this user
I am working with a group of young people at a local church who are, frankly, having a bit of a hard time growing up.

They are either just out of high school or have been out just a few years.

A handful of us are taking up the challenge of doing something really hard in the next year ... starting on/abt Aug 1 till July 31 of next year.

They, and I, have from now till the end of next month to come up with a yearlong challenge of something really hard.

Everybody will do their own thing ... but we hope to motivate and challenge and hold one another accountable.

This challenge will be above and beyond our normal routine.

I am thinking along the lines of reading 20,000 pages or writing 100,000 words or physically moving my body 500 hours ... that kind of thing.

Anybody here in the forum want to join us?

@Belew Does everyone do the same hard thing or do we come up with something that is hard for us individually? (Physically moving 500 hours isn't a challenge for me, for example, but following up on queries I've sent out would be an extreme challenge.)

This is an excellent idea. Reminds me of the adage If you want something done give it to a busy person.
Sometimes I think it is better to challenge ourselves beyond what we think we are capable of; that is what gets us out of our comfort zones; that is where the real growth is.
Marginal increases in effort produce marginal gains. In one of Benjamin Hardy's posts on Medium he discusses "going 10X", the idea of making your goal ten times bigger and how that pushes you to change your thinking. There is no reason any of us cannot dramatically increase our productivity by shedding our limiting beliefs.
Yes, I would like to join in this endeavor. I believe that I, and others, can achieve more than we believe.
Regards
Peter

@tracy

No way we all do the same thing.

Each will pick their own? I just threw out a couple of examples.

500 hrs used to be quite easy for me ... but not now. I am still thinking of my 'hard thing.'

@peterneeves

Great! Take some time to come up with your 'hard thing.'

I'll keep this thread active ... with updates and challenges others come up with.

Great! Will be happy to have you on board.

Feel free to think out loud here as well.

Perhaps we can all motivate one another.

The challenge can be work related ... or not.

The only real criteria is that it has to be hard ... for the participant.

Thank you. Yes, isn't committing the easy part? There is a bit I need to sort out for what specific 'hard thing' to use. I may post some of that process here as well.

Looking forward to this adventure!

Not sure about the challenge but, if you'd like, I'd be happy to send you an mp3 of a talk I did titled, "Yes You Can."

It's a 32 minute motivational talk I gave for the "Women's Health Summit" in Glouchester Township, NJ.

They've been told all the things they can't do or be. I'd like them to see all the things they can.

Here are links to either Soundcloud or Spreaker. One day, I'll understand the difference between them:-)

Enjoy

The goal is to not do smth we can but to do smth we think we can't. And to spur one another on.

Let's think out loud here.

What's on ur mind?
