My daughter and I volunteered at a charity event today.

We were trying to give away calendars for the group we represented.

We started off with 9 calendars laid out.

I explained to her that if we decrease the number that we have on the table more people will likely take one.

She looked at me puzzled.

"Let's try."

We went to six, then five, and they started to disappear. We went down to 2 and I told her that if there are too few nobody will take them anymore for fear they will leave us empty.

3-5 was the magic number to watch them disappear.

That's very interesting. I wonder if the same principle applies for products in a shop?

It does. When you shop at Amazon.com invariably you will see 3 left at this price or 4 or 2.

When you shop at Expedia, 2 rooms left at this price and so on.
