2 High School Kids in a Coffee Shop ...2777

Forum Owner Belew private msg quote post Address this user
Am I getting older or kids getting dumber?

2 high school kids just walked by.

One asked the other, "Is Ohio a state in the United States?"

Maybe had they been in school instead of skipping out for lunch ... he'd know.

And companies are spending money out the wazoo to market to them?!?!

@Belew Should a school still be the main place for kids to get most of their knowledge? Or, do we need a revolution in the 'education system' to be more useful & meaningful for kids? When I went to school many years ago the answer to the question- How many planets are their in the Universe? Of course it's nine isn't it? No you dummy there are an unlimited number of planets in the vast Universe that's expanding constantly. i.e. many more than only nine.

"As children watch less TV, professional services network PwC said it expects the digital advertising market for kids to grow to $1.2bn by 2019 – at which point it will represent 28% of all advertising to children."

Some companies might pay to teach their kids the names of all the states.

@Seniorpreneur

It depends on the applied definition of "universe" -- one of which is the solar system. And, of course, the answer now is 8. I think NASA misplaced one!

But you are right, school is actually the worst learning platform we have, It is out of date, out of sync and ill equipped. It was never designed for what is being asked of it today and what is being asked, frankly, is probably the wrong question.

And as for the masses, I was watching a live quiz with 3 young adult (millennial) couples competing. The questions, which at least one, and most often all three, failed:

1) What does the DC in Washington DC stand for?
2) What major corporation has the initials GM?
3) Who is known as the First Lady?
4) What is paper made from?
5) What vegetable is a pickle made from?
6) What time is it when the big hand is on the 3 and the little hand on the 6?
7) Where is Tiananmen Square?
8) How much is 9 times 9 (9x9=)
9) Which Nazi Field Marshal was known as the Dessert Fox?
10) How many days in 2 years.
11) Who is believed to have assassinated John F. Kennedy?
12) Who invented the telephone?
13) Where is Paris located?
14) How many states in the United States of America?
15) How many stripes on the US Flag?

One of the couples got none of them right.

The winner successfully answered 5 of them.

No one got 1, 3, 5 (Spontaneous comment after the round, "I didn't know a pickle was made from a vegetable".) 7, 9 (when subsequently asked, "Haven't you heard of World War II?" all three couples, blank-faced, shook their heads or said, "No".) 11, 13 ("London?" Yikes.) 15.

Among the 6 people where 3 college graduates.

If the parents would put down their mobile phones, turn off the tvm put the beer away and pay attention to their children, a major change would happen.

From a Forrest Gump joke:
What days of the week begin with the letter T? Today and Tomorrow.
How many seconds in a year? 12, Jan 2nd, Feb 2nd,,, Dec 2nd.
What is God's first name? Andy.

@morrnel Uh, my wife says you left off the explanation regarding Andy and God's name, but she doesn't remember what it is. Would you mind...? TIA.
