Lots of people here are involved in content marketing, so perhaps we could all answer this...

Thanks

For me it would be "inbound":

Inbound marketing allows me to earn my full time living online.

@dono2081

How do you distinguish between inbound and content marketing?

Ha ha, good question.

Content marketing (from Pulizzi) includes on-site content and its social sharing / promotion components.

Inbound includes all content marketing, plus other forms of paid promotion -- native advertising, guest posts, FB boosted posts and the like -- that drives visitors to the content (as opposed to driving the visitor to an on-site sales proposition, which is also a good thing, but generally not on the initial visit to the site).

This follows tidily ramping people up along Eugene Schwartz' 'levels of awareness.'

@dono2081

"that drives visitors.." is not inbound, is it?

Content marketing can take two forms... creating content that markets for you - pure inbound.

Or creating content then marketing that content = outbound. No?

Advertising that drives visitors to on-site content creates viewers to the site, and therefore its goal is to create 'inbound' traffic. Same with search-engine-friendly content.

Advertising that drives prospects to an e-commerce platform (Amazon, for example, or BestBuy in the physical world) is the realm of traditional advertising -- stimulus, shelf, experience.

Another description -- a goal of an inbound campaign could be to manage ZMOT.

For me ...

Content marketing is when people find my content - organic search, organic referral. Nothing I did but create something really cool.

Marketing content is any effort to push, buy, coerce, intentionally share to get people to notice.
