What is a good rule of thumb in relation to sentence construction? I tend to write long sentences. Is there a certain number of words or characters?

Stanley Fish. How to Write a Sentence: And How to Read One.
I'm currently reading this book. $11 on Kindle.

If you use MS Word to write you blogs as I do, turn on the option to show readability statistics of the text you are writing.

Word Options/Proofing/Show readability statistics

The Flesch Reading Ease and Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level will tell you reading difficulty.

Newspapers are said to write to a sixth grade level. Which is a real challenge. All too often, my writing is very high making it too hard for people to read easily.

The Wordpress SEO plugin grades your writing giving it similar information.

@dzflower453

Write online as if you are writing to beginner to intermediate students.

Simple sentences are better than complex.

After all, search bots are reading your stuff in a second language to them.

But do not sacrifice the quality of the content.

Just present it as simply as possible.

For SEO purposes short sentences, and single syllable words, are better.

"Keep them short if you can."

is better than

"Keep sentences short if possible."

But ALWAYS write for your audience first and search engines second.
