If You Recommended One Business Book..967

jycmba private msg quote post Address this user
..what would it be?

I think I mentioned it before but I'd recommend The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho.

Why a work of fiction?

Because it's a meditation on how the media makes it seem like a steady climb to success when in reality it looks like this..

I just got off a podcast interview (feels so different to be on the other end of the mike!) and although I don't know what will come out of it, they approached me because of my LinkedIn profile and writing.

..and that came out of what I learned from watching @Belew and @Steve..

What one book would you recommend to an entrepreneur or someone somewhere on their own success journey?

@jycmba

Was the podcast recorded? Will we have the chance to listen to it?

Hmm... business book? That's a great question.

I was in the very process of writing a post on influencers when the notification popped up in my email box for this new thread.

The answer might come across as odd, but those who know me, won't think me strange to say so. I will go with the Bible. The section I am reading/studying now is the Gospel of Mark.

I am looking at the main character, Jesus, from a different angle and seeing him as the greatest influencer of all-time. He was an original content marketer.

He mastered inbound marketing. He did it by:

1. doing a pre-launch
2. literally immersing himself in his work
3. solving needs
4. creating a tribe
5. some old-fashioned hard work, too.

At the end of the first chapter it says, "...(he) stayed outside in lonely places. Yet the people still came to him from everywhere.

I think I will learn a LOT more about this character. I think I will learn a lot more about what it takes to be influential, to do content marketing right.

I'll definitely keep you all posted on the podcast - it both inspired and was inspired my LinkedIn article that ended up titled "Sell Your Story Before Selling Your Business."

I know, sounds repetitive but that was intentional in the end.

My constant dance is between artist (putting out my vision) and entrepreneur (throttling back based on feedback.)

I'd have to go with An Uncommon Freedom by Dr. Charles Paul Conn, president of Lee University in Cleveland, Tennessee, professional speaker, and successful author of more than 20 books.

I am a couple of chapters shy of finishing "Launch" by Jeff Walker.

Having a list and an expertise is the really hard part apparently. After that launching is easy.

I have done the really hard part.

the weekend is supposed to be relaxing. My mind, however, is really racing.

@Belew

It's an older book that I have had for years -- 20 perhaps -- and is probably out of print. I am surprised there aren't any used copies available.

The E Myth or E Myth Revisited (the updated version) should be on everyone's reading list, especially if they are in business.

This looks like it might be an interesting read:

How to Influence People: Make a Difference in Your World

I'm picking up a copy as soon as my Kindle is charged.

@Belew - I think Jim Dornan is from your neck of the woods.

@Belew - "When the student is ready, the teacher appears.."

Sometimes it's not just our content or the audience, the stars may not have aligned yet, and they're simply not ready for it - and sometimes may never be for whatever reason..

For the longest time I had no interest in the Mad Men series but lately I wanted to peer into the mindset of that era.

That, of course, inspired this LinkedIn post which highlights what's different between now and then.

To say we've moved past the days of interruption marketing would be premature - but it's certainly more costly in terms of ROI.

Back to the original point - sometimes it's a matter of creating content for where / when the audience is getting your message.

Something that social media ideally can do a better job vs. other types of marketing.
